Why Are Libraries Important in Rural Kenya?

June 2024 newsletter

Photos have been removed from this issue because of a law in Kenya requiring strict documentation for photos and videos featuring school children.

Greetings!

HERE are a couple of short videos that demonstrate WHY.

James Patterson is the author of over 200 books, everything from murder mysteries to fantasys to children's books. To paraphrase James Patterson,

"Libraries Save Lives"

That is a bold statement and begs the question: "How do libraries save lives?

  • Libraries expand educational opportunities which increases employment opportunties which reduces poverty.
  • Librares give children hope for achieveing their dreams. As 13 year old Branmuu told me "These books, they opened up the world to me."
  • Libraries raise awareness and understanding of: Climate Change Environmental issues Wildlife conservation Human wildlife conflict Disease prevention - Covid, HIV, Cancer, etc. Child abuse Human trafficking Pregnancy FGM - Female circumcision Crime Drug Abuse

Creating libraries in rural Kenyan schools are an investment in the lives of future leaders. An investment in children who are hungry to learn and contribute to their families and communities. Listen to learners at Mt. Kenya Primary School talk about their dreams and why they aspire to these goals.

So far, 631 individuals and organizations in 35 states and 7 contires have donated to Libraries For Kids, Int'l. On behalf of the children in Kenya - THANK YOU!! You are making a difference in the lives of millions of children in Kenya. So far we have put books in 6,540 rural schools impacting 1.6 million children plus their teachers, families, and communities.

I am eagerly looking forward to returning to Kenya in May and June. I will be visiting 15 schools and teacher Anna Tayiai who inspired Libraries for Kids, Int'l.

NOTE: Libraries for Kids, Int'l does not pay for any travel expenses. When any of us travel to Kenya we pay our own way.

SHARING TEXTBOOKS IN RURAL KENYA

When you were in school did you have your own textbook? In rural Kenya, 20 to 30 students have to share one textbook. Imagine sharing your math, English, science, Swahili, or social studies book with 30 other students. How would your education have been affected if you had to share your textbook and had no library resources or recreational reading? Why do they have to share textbooks? Because governmental support of rural schools is only $5.50 per student per year to cover textbooks, supplies, building maintenance, and support staff. Parents pay fees but not nearly enough to cover everything, so textbooks are kept for years and years and reused and shared. Many parents who are subsistence farmers or pastoral herders can't afford the fees so their children cannot go to school. Look closely at the condition of these books.

How you can help?

BE A VOLUNTEER

Your experience and time can contribute to improving the lives of millions of children in rural schools with limited resources. Right now we operate in Kenya, Africa where we have put books in 6,223 schools impacting the lives of 1,550,000 children. But there are approximately 20,000 rural schools in Kenya with 5 million students so we have more work to do there before expanding to other countries in East Africa and beyond. Our vision is to eventually put books in rural schools in all 55 countries in Africa. Here are some ways you can help:

Promoting and helping with events. Local School Outreach Project. Be an Ambassador. Help find and write grants. Help us find speaking engagements to share our story.

Events o Sell tickets o Find sponsors o Distribute brochures to local businesses o Volunteer at events o Promote events

School Outreach We want help developing a program to go into local schools to educate students as to what it is like to attend a rural school in Kenya.

What Does it Cost to Ship Books?

It costs about $0.625 per book to get a book from the US to a school in Kenya. So, a $100 donation pays for 160 books. The cost breakdown is:

A Container shipped from Marietta, GA to our warehouse in Kitui, Kenya costs $16,000

Kenyan Customs Duties = $3,000 We have applied several times to be exempt from duty but have been rejected. The organizations in the Africa Library Collaboration have also been rejected. However, we will keep trying.

$6,000: Meeting with county directors of education to prepare the logistics for that county. Receiving, processing, and delivery of books to schools. All books are unloaded, manually stamped "Libraries For Kids, Int'l, Not for Sale," sorted by subject and grade level, re- packed in boxes or sacks, and then delivered to schools.

The last leg of the delivery is usually putting 2 - 4 boxes on the back of a motorcycle. In a couple of cases, the motorcycles couldn't get to the school, so the boxes were hand-carried the last couple of kilometers.

Total Cost = $25,000. On average there are 40,000 books in a container but it could be anywhere from 35,000 to 50,000 books.

In short,

Your Donation Counts!

Here is another way to look at it. Every dollar donated impacts 3 1/3 students. So a $100 donation is impacting 333 children putting 160 books in a rural school.

These kids are hungry for knowledge. To them, school is a privilege, not an obligation.

So far 559 individuals or organizations in 33 states and 6 countries have donated to Libraries For Kids, Int'l. Scroll down to see our Honor Roll of contributors whom we greatly appreciate.

WANT TO DONATE BOOKS?

We get all our books from the non-profit, Book Distribution Partners. Since 1988 they have shipped over 59 million books to all 55 countries in Africa. They ship to a specific address in a country but do not get involved in delivering books once they arrive. The teachers in Kenya tell us what type of books they want. Libraries For Kids, Int'l submits that list to Book Distribution Partners which loads the books in containers and arranges shipment to our warehouse in Kitui, Kenya. When they arrive, our team in Kenya, led by our Operations Coordinator, Wanjiku Francis, processes them in and gets the books delivered to schools.

If you want to donate books we recommend that you mail them using the US Post Office's inexpensive media rate to Book Distribution Partners's warehouse: 1491 Cobb Industrial Drive, Bldg. B, Marietta, GA 30066 USA, Phone: 404-603-8680.

SHORT TERM GOAL:

5 MILLION CHILDREN

Over 600,000 books have been shipped to Kenya and books have been delivered to 6,223 schools impacting the lives of approximately 1,555,750 children plus their teachers, families, and communities.

There are about 20,000 rural primary and secondary schools in Kenya, with approximately 5 million students. We need to fund more containers.

Your support can help over 5 million children expand their educational opportunities and have the opportunity for a better life. But the impact extends way beyond 5 million children - teachers, parents, other family members, and communities are benefiting.

Our long-term vision is to help establish libraries in other countries in Africa and beyond.

PLEASE DONATE

Just a few dollars a month helps. You can set up a recurring monthly donation on our website.

Consider a legacy gift as part of your estate planning.

What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others is immortal.

Consider a legacy gift as part of your estate planning. 100 years from now no one will remember who we were or what we did. The only true legacy any of us can leave is the positive impact on the lives of others. You can leave a lasting legacy in the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. ______________________________________

What does your donation accomplish?

Libraries For Kids, Int'l offers not a hand-out, but a hand-up. Parents in rural Kenya pay tuition for their children to go to school. It is a huge sacrifice when your income is derived from a subsistence farm or your herd of sheep, goats, or cattle. But it is a testament to their hunger for knowledge. Unfortunately, many parents cannot afford the tuition fees.

The Kenyan government gives each rural school $5.50 per student per year. For a school with a student population of 100 that is $550.00 per year to pay for the school's expenses, textbooks, supplies, building maintenance, support staff, etc.) Obviously, this is inadequate As a result, textbooks and libraries are lacking.

How can people lift themselves up and solve their problems without knowledge?

Your donations are helping hundreds of thousands of children in Kenya, and hopefully someday in other countries, to help themselves.

I hope you will consider Libraries For Kids, Int'l.
